More than a quarter of a century after its founding in Marbella, Exxacon is embarking on a new phase of growth, guided by the same conviction that inspired its creation: that a well-designed home enhances the lives of those who live in it. In a recent interview with Diario Sur, Elena Cuberos, Managing Director of Exxacon, reflected on her 26 years at the helm of the Málaga-based developer and outlined the key principles behind its business model: making good design accessible to all, sustainability, innovation in construction methods and close, personal support for customers.
For Elena Cuberos, the overall assessment of this journey “could not be more positive”. What she values most is having grown without being swept along by the pace of the market or succumbing to external pressures, instead making considered decisions, acting prudently and always keeping a long-term perspective.
Today, Exxacon operates across Andalucía, Madrid and the Valencian Community, continuing to design every development with its future residents and the way they will live in mind. As our Managing Director points out, the company has learnt a great deal along the way, including from its mistakes. This is why Elena is convinced that “our best years are still ahead of us”.
Design, quality and energy efficiency for everyone
One of Exxacon’s key contributions to the residential property sector has been to demonstrate that design, quality and energy efficiency are not exclusive to luxury homes. Every project begins with a focus on creating the best possible layouts, maximising natural light and designing communal areas that genuinely add value. As Elena Cuberos emphasises, anyone buying a home “is choosing a way of life, not just a certain number of square metres”.
Our Smart Living philosophy, introduced in 2010, is part of our DNA and translates into practical benefits: modern homes that consume less energy, feature functional design and are designed to enhance residents’ well-being. For years, we have incorporated geothermal and aerothermal systems for heating and cooling, and we developed Andalucía’s first residential building to achieve Passivhaus certification.
We are also transforming the way homes are built. We use digital design and planning tools and are introducing the industrialisation of façades and wet rooms, enabling us to identify potential issues before construction begins, keep projects on schedule more effectively and reduce waste.
Innovation also extends to our relationships with customers. We are digitising our sales and customer service processes to provide better support throughout the home-buying journey, from the initial enquiry about a development to moving into the finished property. Buying a home off-plan is a major decision that requires trust and confidence. That is why we provide transparent information, regular updates and personalised support throughout construction, at handover and after residents move into their new homes.
A shared accolade: Professional Achievement Award
Elena Cuberos recently received the Professional Achievement Award at the second edition of the Málaga Women’s Entrepreneurship and Leadership Awards, organised by the Unimos Talento network. As she explains, an award of this kind prompts reflection on the journey so far, and for her, above all, it brings to mind the people who have made it possible: her business partner, Gastón Aigneren, who believed in her from the company’s earliest days, and a team she describes as “talented, service-oriented and admirably able to adapt to change without losing sight of what matters”. For this reason, although she accepts the award in her own name, she sees it as recognition shared by the whole team.
In the interview, our Managing Director also acknowledges how much it means to receive this award in Málaga, the province where Exxacon was founded and where most of its activity remains concentrated. She particularly values the fact that it comes from a network committed to raising the profile of women in leadership positions, including within the property sector.
Diverse teams and a leadership style that listens
Asked about the female leadership that has characterised Exxacon, Elena Cuberos prefers not to attribute particular qualities to one gender. However, she is clear that diverse teams make better decisions. “In our case, this has translated into a more collaborative management style, one that listens to the team, understands every development in detail and pays close attention to the customer. In fact, many of the improvements we have made to our developments have come from feedback shared by homeowners after receiving their keys”, she explains.
